Safety Management Systems

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s (ERAU) Safety Management Systems examines aspects of Safety Management Systems (SMS) pertaining to aviation flight and ground safety. Students are familiarized with the components, pillars, roles and responsibilities of SMS. Course content also provides an overview of safety within an organization, as well as investigations and human factors as they relate to aviation safet.

Course Information

  • This is an online asynchronous instructor facilitated course with weekly modules and assignments, but no scheduled meeting times. Students should plan to spend approximately 10-15 hours per week working through the course. Coursework is web-based with no additional software required, although a reliable internet connection is recommended. All courses open 48 business hours in advance of each start date, and must be completed by their scheduled end dates. Digital certificates are available upon successful completion of individual courses. Printed certificates are mailed only upon completion of a full certificate program.

    Mr. Gibson is a valued member in aviation. He is a highly accomplished aviation professional with extensive experience in financial, operations, safety and regulatory compliance. He has held the positions of Director of Flight Operations/Aviation, Chief Pilot, Director of Safety and Check Airman, senior consultant/lead auditor. Phil's distinguished career as a pilot and manager include more than 38 years of experience in the FAR Part 91, 135 and 121 environments. He has amassed more than 23,500 flight hours and is type rated in the Gulfstream G450/GV/G550, the Falcon 900 B/C/EX series, Boeing 737/757/767, the Learjet 20/30/50 series and the Fokker F28.
